Acne; Information, Treatment and Removal

Acne is a term comprising several types of skin lesions, namely

  • comedones
  • papules
  • pustules
  • nodules and
  • inflammatory cysts.
  • Acne, pimples and zits are synonyms, and all mean the same skin disease that haunts teenagers and adolecents. A large portion of the population have pimples in one degree or the other during adolecence, both males and females. It normally burns out after puberty, but some cases persist far into adult age.

They usually cover cosmetically sensitive areas like the face, and upper parts of the body, both the upper back and the upper front.

All have seen them. They look like red papules of varying sizes, black spots, pus filled blemishes, cyst-like lesions and nodules of hardened areas containing non-infected skin-debris and sebum.

It starts popping up when the hormonal surge during puberty starts, and is closely related to the concentration of androgens (male steroid hormones) in both sexes. DHEA-S (dihydroepiandrosterone-sulphate), androstendione, dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and testosterone all contribute. Insulin-like growth factor 1 and insuline resistancy of the skin has also been shown to be associated with pimples. Hormones alone don't cause it though, because if it did, it would not have been termed a disease, but a normal phase all people pass through. This is not the case.

    Causes

The combination of the hormonal changes during puberty and several other contributors give rise to zits. Here are some of them:

  • diet (no particular food stuffs have been detected that apply to all. milk and diary products, sea food, high carbohydrate content.... It varies from person to person.)
  • hormonal factors, including anabolic steroids of both endogenous (produced in the body) and exogenous origin (received from outer sources, like medicines.
  • stress (hormonal effects)
  • family tendency
  • hyperactive sebacous glands (hormonal effect)
  • accumulation of dead skin cells
  • bacterial overgrowth and bacterial oversensitivity or "allergy" to them
  • medicines containing halogens (iodine, chloride, bromide)
  • medicines containing lithium and barbiturates
  • exposure to chlorine compounds, including chlorinated dioxines (chloracne) These can cause severe and long standing acne.
  • Illnesses where anabolic steroids are produced in increased amounts
  • Effects

Scarring in some cases, psychological, such as reduced self-esteem and depression. Pimples usually appears during adolescence, when people already tend to be most socially insecure.

    Treatment

One must be patient, as it takes time to empty the pores and sebaceous glands. Treatments claiming to heal the condition in two weeks will probably fail to do so. There are exceptions, though!.

    The aim is:

  • to purify the blod by making changes in the diet
  • normalising shedding into the pore to prevent blockage
  • killing P. acnes (antibiotics)
  • antinflammatory effects
  • hormonal manipulation
  • 1. Exfoliation of the skin mechanical or chemical by different kinds of rubbing or salicylic acid or glycolic acid
  • 2. Antibiotics, either topically or orally
  • 3. hormonal treatments: anti-testosterone, Cyproterone, in combination with an oestrogen (Diane 35) is particularly effective. Several other hormonal treatments are also effective, for example certain contraceptives.
  • 4. Cortisone injections into large and unresponsive pimples
  • 5. Retinoids topically or orally
  • 6. Light therapy (blue and red light, and phototerapy)
  • 7. Homoepathic treatment
  • 8 Less common, but often effective treatments: zinc gluconate, sulphur, tea tree oil, heat therapy, nicotinamide (B3), Aloe Vera gel, Essential Oils, Herbal preparations (see banners below).
