Cold Sores, Information, Best Natural Treatment
Cold sores is a viral disease caused by Herpes simplex virus 1 , causing blisters and sores in the face and lip area. The disease manifests in two ways; primary infection and secondary outbreaks.
Herpes labialis manifest as clusters of small vesicles that burst
and leave the skin susceptible to secondary bacterial infections
and crusts in the face, most often on or around the lips.
The primary infection gives fever and general feeling of illness
and weakness like one experiences during influenzas.
Later manifestations (secondary manifestations) are usually without these general symptoms.
At least they appear with lesser intensity.
HSV 1 infections may manifest again and again, usually when the body is weakened
by other infections, like the flu or colds, overexposure to the sun,
menstruation, serious deseases or treatments thereof, or any other weakening factor.

Symptoms
Also known as fever blisters, herpes labialis is caused by
the herpes simplex virus or the HSV. The blisters or
lesions are the most common symptoms of the disease and
they are normally seen in the facial area – in the nose,
lips, chin and even in the fingers. These blisters appear
red in color and are slightly raised from the skin. They
contain a fluid inside and the lesions also become quite
painful. In fact, the pain appears in the affected region
of the body a couple of days prior to the blisters. In a
matured stage, the lesions sometimes break up, and the
fluid inside them comes out. The blisters normally stay
for 8 to 10 days, and then they start to heal.
The blisters of herpes labialis look much like the chicken pox
lesions. HSV and chickenpox virus are in the same family
of herpetic viruses. Cold sore is extremely contagious and spreads
through direct contact with an affected person.
There are several stages in the life of a cold sore. When a
cold sore is about to appear, there will be a tingling sensation
in that area and then redness. Then the cold sore will start to
form as very small blisters or these may group together and
appear bigger. The third stage is the herpetic lesion becoming a red
sore which is most noticeable even by those who have never had
a cold sore. These become painful blisters and are very contagious.
Towards the end, the sores start to heal when a brown scab
may form over the area. However, if this scab cracks open it
may bleed. In the final stages of healing, the cold sore goes
from brown to yellow. The whole cycle takes about ten days.
Herpes labialis do occasionally occur inside the mouth and then normally
on the gums or the roof of the mouth. These lesions in the mouth
are quite small and often begin as a blister. They can heal quite
quickly. The first sign is often a tingling and itchiness around
the tongue, gums or the inside of the cheeks. A soft, bland diet
is recommended to avoid irritating the sores and surrounding sensitive
areas of the mouth.

How common are HSV infections?
Herpes labialis is very common and can be easily spread.
There are about 100 million recurring infections annually
in the United States alone. Many people wrongly believe that
herpes labialis is as a result of a head cold. They are a viral
infection caused by the HSV 1 virus. The virus
tends to remain dormant in the nerve cells after a primary
infection (the first infection when the disease is contracted)
and it is there for life. There are certain elements that may
trigger cold sores or secondary outbreaks, and these include:
Overexposure to the sun
Illness and injury
Fever
Weakened immune system
Emotional stress and fatigue
Hormonal changes among pregnant women and women
in their menstrual cycle
