Genital Rashes

Genital rashes strike much fear into the heart of a normal, sexually active adult. Some are serious and others aren’t – you’ll have to investigate to find out.

Spotting a rash

Actually finding a rash in the genital area, especially if it doesn’t itch, is almost always easier for men than women. As such, many women are taken by surprise when one appears. On the other hand, some rashes are recurrent conditions, such as psoriasis, that have very unfortunately for you, decided to strike a particularly sensitive area.

Types of rashes and their causes

Just like any other part of your skin, your genital skin is just a susceptible (in some cases far more so) to various skin disorders. Contact dermatitis from various substances such as soap or perfumes is very common. If you are allergic to latex, even brief exposure can be enough to cause an outbreak.

Babies are prone to diaper rashes/nappy rashes, and anyone who is in a situation where the skin is exposed to feces or urine, rashes may develop in the genital area. As with many simple rashes, removing the irritant is often enough for the rash to clear up. You may need to wear loose fitting clothing for a while to facilitate air circulation.

Candida (yeast) infections are among the most frequent genital infections producing genital rashes. Penile yeast infectionsare especially important, as they may run without symptoms and cause trouble for sexual partners. Vaginal yeast infectionsare usually more likely to yield symptoms, and can be quite annoying. Serious rashes

Perhaps the reason so many people are concerned is that many very serious disorders first present as rashes and then subside to do their damage. Syphilis is perhaps the most destructive of genital rashes, eventually causing irreparable nerve damage if left untreated. Genital warts are also a concern. Scabies can attack the genital area and leave a rash-like appearance.

Thankfully, there are fairly quick tests for venereal diseases that can diagnose you in short order. And, while treatment is usually simple, one should be careful to not have unprotected sex while genital rashes are present.
