Staph infections of the skin
Staph infections of the skin are well worth knowing something about. How to deal with them?
Many strains of Staphylococcus Aureus are now resistant to
antibiotics, especially penicillins, but also many other antibiotics.
So these infections are becoming increasingly difficult to treat.
There are good options within reach though, so keep reading!
Many types of staph infections of the skin heal spontanously without
treatment, and it is good to know which ones, so that
fear doesn't take over, and the infections may be dealt with properly.
True,- staph infections of the skin may be dangerous, but for otherwise
healthy individuals they usually are not. For people who are weakened
by whatever causes, the staphylococci may be a real threat.
Some of the weakening and/or predisposing factors are:

Prevention
Having a well functioning and strong immune system is needed to prevent the staph infections of the skin from developing. This is a large subject,
and involves supporting the body and mind in all possible ways. Healthy diet (this may be very different from what you think!), excercise, water, fresh air, sunshine,
rest...... One can also use herbs to support the immune system. Click here to know more.
Good hand hygiene and hygiene in general is vital when you interact with staph-victims.
What types of staph infections of the skin are there?
The most frequent staph infections of the skin are:
furuncles or boil skin infections (click to know more)
carbuncles (click to know more)
folliculitis (click to know more)
several but not all instances of impetigo (click to know more)
several but not all instances of cellulitis (click to know more)
scalded skin syndrome.
Scalded skin syndrome
Scalded skin syndrome (SSS) most often affects newborns and children under age 5. Along with cellulitis, it ranks among the more serious staph infections of the skin.
The illness usually starts with a localized staph skin infection, but the staph bacteria
manufacture a toxin that affects skin all over the body. The child has a fever, rash,
and sometimes blisters. The rash begins around the mouth, then spreads to the trunk,
arms, and legs. As blisters burst and the rash passes, the top layer of skin is dislodged
and the skin surface becomes red and raw, like a burn.
Treatment
Treatment of staph infections of the skin.
Carbuncles and furuncles may heal spontanously, or with some help from warm water
soaks several times a day. If severe or painful, they need to be lanced by the doctor
to evacuate the pus, making them more available to antibiotic treatments, either
orally or topically. The lancing gives tremendous pain relief. The evacuation of pus
may happen spontanously from the head(s) of the boils, and this is equally effective
as the surgical treatment. One can help this rupture and evacuation by applying warm
water soaks or tamanu oil soaks.
Cellulitis most often need oral antibiotic treatment, or even administered intravenously
in hospital. It is usually not contagious.
Hot tub folliculitis usually needs no treatment. Just avoid contaminated hot tubs.
Folliculitis or boils are regularly treated with topical and/or oral antibiotics for
one to two weeks. Lancing is often needed, like with carbuncles. Over-the-counter
antibiotics like Neosporin can provide a cure in some cases, as it has a mild antibacterial
effect.
Impetigo infections are treated just like other skin infections, with topical or oral
antibiotics. Some cases heal spontanously.
Scalded skin syndrome is a serious illness that needs to be treated and monitored in a
hospital. It affects the body in the same way as serious burns. After treatment, most
kids make a full recovery from SSS.
