Tanning Bed Pimples
Small tanning bed pimples may result from visiting a tanning facility. There are, thankfully, a few things you can do to keep them from becoming a major problem.
If you live in a northern climate or even a mildly temperate one, many women (and an increasing number of men) regularly visit tanning beds. One unfortunate side effect that many are forced to deal with are the appearance of tanning bed pimples. There are several things you can do to minimize the appearance of these blemishes.
Rashes and contact dermatitis
Many rashes are caused by the use of products during tanning that you may be mildly or profoundly allergic to. Even a very small amount of an irritating fragrance in a lotion product may have deleterious effects after exposure to tanning bed lamp exposure.
Heat rash is another skin problem associated with tanning beds. Those with clogged sweat glands can find themselves with little clear or red bumps around collected sweat. These almost always go away on their own in a day or two.
Infections
Some pimples are a result of infections. If the pimples seem to be under the skin, or seem particularly large, they are likely an infection of Saphylococus aureus, or just plain staph. This bacteria can enter the skin through even very tiny openings, though larger pimples and boils are usually found around a hair follicle. Leaving these alone or applying a warm, moist compress is the best way to treat these – no popping, or they can spread deeper into the surrounding tissue.
The common Propionibacterium acnes that multiply when changes in glandular activity (usually in puberty) cause pores to clog can also be made worse with the treatment. Though red and blue light is sometimes used to treat the condition, the uv wavelengths used in tanning lamps have little effect on the bacteria and can irritate the surrounding skin. Beds that use also incorporate red light can have a positive effect on some tanning bed pimples.
Choosing a tanning bed salon that maintains clean facilites without harsh chemicals is one way to prevent tanning bed pimples. It is often a good idea to ask about such practices or have a trial session before you commit to a tanning package. Use as few harsh chemicals as possible and don’t rub your skin too vigorously when you shower after a tanning session.
