Scaly, itchy types of skin rashes

Eczemas which causes scaly, itchy red rashes may show up at any time during your life. Eczema can occur in anybody at any age and for many different reasons. Eczema is not one thing, but consists of several types of skin rashes including atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis is to some degree hereditary. Generally, atopic dermatitis is the most frequently seen of the eczemas. It usually begins in early childhood with red, dry cheeks, sensitive skin, and small rashes on various parts of the body, especially in the bends of the elbows and knees, and is associated with strong itch and dry, scaling skin.

This may continue throughout adulthood, but most cases burn out during puberty. Scaly itchy patches may appear anywhere. The cause of atopic dermatitis is not entirely known. What is known is that the condition is to some degree associated with allergies and even asthma later in life. It usually aggravates in the cold, dry winter months when cold air makes the skin even more dry and sensitive.

Doctors do not believe foods and soaps used to wash the body and clothes are meaningful culprits in these types of skin rashes, although some individuals believe their skin is less affected if they avoid certain foods or soaps. Atopic dermatitis is non contagious.

Sufferers should use moisturizing creams and lotions, not bathe too often, avoid winds and cold temperatures, and follow the doctors suggestions. Remember, applying water dries out the skin and aggravates, while fatty creams and lotions, even oils soothe and calm this skin condition.

Contact dermatitis is another form of eczema, however it is not hereditary and occurs just as the name suggests when someone comes in contact with some element to which one is allergic and that causes a rash. Common examples of contact dermatitis include poison ivy and other poisonous plants, costume jewelry, rubber (examination gloves for example) and the like. In these situations, the rash usually appears at the location where the allergen contacted the skin, but may appear in other places also.

Poison rashes, nickel allergy and other contact allergies may spread to other areas of the body.

Treatement depends on the pinpointing of the allergen that caused the reaction. It is usually an itchy, scaly rash. Typical is the hand eczemas that appear after exposure to rubber gloves or other allergens.

Treatment for contact dermatitis generally includes a hydrocortisone cream applied to the rash on a regular basis as well as non-steroidal options, especially after every hand wash.

Other scaly types of skin rashes that are common include psoriasis and pityriasis rosea. Your doctor will be able to determine if your scaly rash is an eczema or another skin disease, with other causal factors.

    Psoriasis and pityriasis rosea

Psoriasis has a number of presentations ranging from the guttate, diffusely spread psoriasis with small elements all over, to the large plaques that most people have seen, down to levels of manifestations that are almost neglible. There are also some who only have manifestations on the scalp (hair-covered areas). Some have nail manifestations, and some even have psoriatic arthritis (joint affections, especially on the distal joints of the fingers), indicating that psoriasis is a systemic disease, and not only a skin disease.

Pityriasis rosea is a rash disease of unknown origin that most often appears in youths and young adults. It starts with a herald patch or a primary patch that is about 3 cm in diameter(+/-). After 1-2 weeks a generalized rash of smaller red, flat patches appear on the entire body proximal to the bends of the knees and the elbows. Facial manifestations may pop up, but this is rare. The primary patch may be preceeded by a period with symtoms of fever and other generalized symptoms commonly seen with infectious diseases, but this varies. The whole illness takes about 6 weeks to clear up, and needs no treatement other than alleviation of the itch.

Scaly types of skin rashes caused by bacteria or fungus

Some types of skin rashes are caused by fungus or bacteriae. This simply means that an infection in your body manifested as a scaly, itchy rash on your skin. The rash may then be the actual infection, like in ringworm (fungus) or impetigo (bacteria), or represent a secondary manifestation of an infection going on somewhere else in the body. These types of rashes are not a result of being unclean. Scalded skin syndrome (SSS) and rash during scarlatina or scarlet fever are examples. During scarlatina and scalded skin syndrome the rash doesn't represent the actual bacterial infection, but are secondary phenomena to the infection that goes on somewhere else.

    Fungal types of skin rashes

Typically you catch fungal rashes from pets, at the gym, and in other locations where many people or pets might congregate. But there are also other ways of contracting these annoying types of skin rashes. If you have a fungus rash, like jock itch or athlete's foot, then you will probably be prescribed an over the counter cream like clotrimazole or terbenafine. These creams applied to the fungus most ofte cure it.

Recurring cases or a chronic tendency to contract fungal infections can also be adressed successfully by some lifestyle- and dietary changes, and by application of natural remedies. Go here to know more!

    Bacterial types of skin rashes

Frequently a bacterial rash known as impetigo will appear on the body in red, scaly patches covered with yellow, honeycomb crusts. This happens frequently in children, and not as often in adults. The infective agent is usually a staph or strep. Impetigo should be treated with antibiotic ointments, or if severe, even oral antibiotic treatment. Minor cases may clear without teatement. Generalized, itchy red bumps

Certain types of skin rashes may develop all over the body as itchy red bumps. The most frequent causes are allergies and viruses. Viral types of skin rashes like chicken pox, rubella and measles manifest itchy red inflamed bumps almost all over the body. Shingles typically appear on unilateral spots in the form of isolated groups of vesicles that turn into yellow brown crusts that fall off after about 10-14 days. It may be painful, even severely painful. If you have a viral rash, it will likely run its course on its own and then go away within a ten days period. Shingles can be treated by the doctor if you arrive at his office withing the very first days of the illness.

Viral types of skin rashes in the form of itchy bumps all over the body calls for a visit to your doctor to get some relief, as the itch may be intolerable.

Shingles might need the attention of a doctor, even a specialist in the case of zoster ophthalmicus.

An allergy can cause itchy red bumps all over the body as well. One common type of allergic rash is from taking a drug your body reacts to.

When taking a new drug, if you develop a red itchy rash in the form of bumps you should consult your doctor.

Drugs an individual has been taking for months or years is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. Food, detergents, and other external factors are blamed for causing these types of rashes. If you have a rash, it may be a reaction to some food that you don't tolerate. External causes (contacts) are rare, but even that happens (f. ex. nickel allergy manifestng in remote areas of the skin).

It may also be a secondary phenomenon to a strep throat illness called scarlet fever or scarlatina in children and youths. The red patches (maculae) are not bacterial infections, but a reaction to toxins produced by the bacteria in the tonsils.
