Yeast Skin Infections

Yeast skin infections, or candidiasis is the most frequent of all yeast infections of the skin.

It is caused by candida albicans, and has many names depending on the location of the infection.

Candida albicans is a peaceful inhabitant of our skin and causes infections only when the host or the skin is weakened.

Various types of infections are possible, including the following:

  • INTERTRIGO are yeast skin infections in the folds of the skin. Yeast infections commonly occur in warm moist body areas, such as in the groin, under the breasts, and under skin folds in obese people. Normally, skin effectively blocks yeast, but any breakdown of its barriers may allow this organism to penetrate and create infection.
  • THRUSH is a candidal infection of the mouth. White patches appear in the mouth. Below these white coatings the mucous membrane is sore, and bleeds easily. Thrush occurs most commonly in persons with chronic diseases including diabetes and HIV/AIDS, cancer, and those who use steroid inhalations or systemic corticosteroids.
  • PERL ECHE (or "angular cheilitis") is a softening of the skin with deep creases around the angles of the mouth. Sores crack easily when mouth is opened wide.
  • DIAPER RASH are yeast skin infections in the diaper area. It is caused by candida and the impairment of the integrity of the skin due to moisture and friction, and even a chemical irritation from the urine or fecal matter. More than being itchy, the area is sore, red and painful to the victim
  • CANDIDAL BODY RASH can result from excess sweating, use of antibiotics, or skin occlusion. It most commonly occurs in people with diabetes who are hospitalized.
  • CANDIDAL VULVOVAGINITIS is a candida infection of the vaginal tract and the external female genital area. Candida albicans is a common inhabitant of the vaginal tract and can result in itching, redness, irritation, and burning.
  • CANDIDAL BALANITIS is a penile yeast infection. It can have anything from zero symptoms where the persons partners yeast problems are the only symptoms he gets, telling him about his own infection. He may have it without knowing. Should therefore be suspected when the partner struggle with candidal vulvovaginitis. The most common presentation is patches of red, inflamed preputium and glans penis with a whitish, cheesy layer of yeast covering parts of or the whole area that is affected. It is itchy, often weeping and slightly sore. In more sever cases, the entire penis, scrotal bag and the surrounding skin is affected, and becomes sore, itching and red.
  • CONGENITAL CUTANOUS CANDIDIASIS are yeast skin infections of the new borne, and results from infection of an infants skin during passage through the birth canal. The rash appears within a few hours of delivery.
  • CANDIDAL PARONYCHIA is a chronic inflammation of the nail fold. In some cases, it causes a discharge with pus, and a soft swelling of the area around the fingernail.
  • EROSIO INTERDIGITALIS BLASTOMYCETICA are yeast skin infections in skin folds between fingers. Skin softening and redness, itching, scaling and cracking occur. Moisture trapped by rings is thought to underlie the condition. Like all skin yeast infections it is more commonly seen in people with diabetes and those who work with water (eg, house workers, launderers, and those who are exposed to strong chemicals).
  • CHRONIC MUCOCUTANOUS CANDIDIASIS is an illness that results from a genetic defect that leaves those who have it with thick horny skin lesions and with nail dystrophy.
  • SYSTEMIC YEAST INFECTIONS are growth of candida throughout the body. This condition is rare, but serious, as it attachs the weakest and the most vulnerable,- people with seriously weakened immune system due to illness or treatment for illness. In systemic candidal disease, as many as 75% of people may die. Recurring systemic yeast infections may be a sign of more serious diseases such as diabetes, leukemia, or AIDS.
  • All the described types of yeast skin infections range from minor manifestations to more serious ones.

    Causes of Yeast Skin Infections

  • antibiotics
  • sugar and fat in the diet
  • stress
  • damaged protective barrier of the skin
  • lowered immunity
  • altered bacterial flora in the gastro-intestinal tract and on the skin
  • poor general health
  • These causes of yeast skin infections are discussed below.

    ANTIBIOTICS
When one uses oral antibiotics, the microbial intestinal flora is altered. Hugh portions of the original flora is destroyed. Remember,- there is an ecology in the intestines, and when some bacteria die, others use the opportunity to get the "upper hand". This is true also for fungi and yeast. When the flora is intact, there is an inner hirarchy with regard to the ratio of the different microorganisms. When the original ratios are lost, several side effects follow, one of which may be overgrowth and invasion by yeast. In a normal flora, yeast is checked by other beneficial bacteria. The control function of other bacteria is lost, wholly or partially when the flora is altered.

SUGAR AND FAT IN THE DIET
Yeast live from sugar/glucose, which is the simplest of carbohydrates. Whenever glucose is ingested and stays in the intestines for too long, yeast may start outnumbering other microorganisms, and/or start creating symptoms of bloating, gas-production, diarrea etc etc, either by fermentation or by gas producing microorganisms multiplying fast by feeding on the sugar. Sugar (sucrose) is a white, chrystalline chemical in pure form, and chemicals like this are never to be used as nutrition. The body does need sugar and glucose, but it must be ingested in the form of natural, unprocessed food stuffs like fruits and vegetables, not in the form of the chrystalline chemical.

Regarding fat: very few people know that one eliminate yeast faster by eliminating fat from the diet that by eliminating sugar. The reason is: when ingesting large portions of fat (most westerners eat 30-70% of their calories in the form of fats, whereas 10% is the optimal amount. Fat reduces the bodys sensitivity to insulin, and the pancreas will have to produce more insulin to get the same effect. This exhausts the pacreas and the isles of Langerhans, and the blood sugar starts rising. yeast has the mission of ridding the body of surplus sugar, and they multiply and enjoy life mightily when they are provided so well for. Reducing sugar in the diet is necessary, while the reduction of fats in the diet is equally important.

    STRESS

Stress reduces the functioning of the immune system. This is now a well researched, universally accepted fact. The mechanisms are many, but one of them is the overproduction of steroid hormones like cortisol in the adrenal glands, and this hormone both dulls the immune system and encourages the growth of yeast. Stress can be in any form and on any level; physical, like when over training, mental from overwork, emotional from disputes and quarrels, and major transitions in life.

DAMAGED PROTECTIVE BARRIER OF THE SKIN

  • Too tight underwear, disallowing proper ventilation
  • Friction from various causes. Too tight clothes.
  • friction from inadequate lubrication during intercourse
  • Douching
  • wearing wet clothes, like bathing suits after bathing.
  • insufficient drying of skin areas after showers or bathing
  • Too rough skin-care products in the form of soaps, additives to the bathing water. pH values, fat content etc matters.
  • increased moisture in genital area or any other skin area, like everywhere when skin is in contact with skin this happens for example under the breasts of women.
  • other skin illnesses like eczemas
  • Too rough treatment of the skin during showers or bathing, and even
  • too frequent or too infrequent washing and cleaning of the skin.

    LOWERED IMMUNITY
Lowered immunity is the result of stress, overwork, other illnesses like f ex diabetes or autoimmune diseases, medication with cortison or repeated or long antibiotic treatments, P-pills, chemotherapy, abuse of alchohol or other substances that put an extra load or stress on the body, pregnancy, old age, young age, HIV and AIDS and ingestion of other pharmaceuticals, large surgical operations, over-taxing the body with heavy training, hormone replacement therapy.....etc etc.

ALTERED MICROBIOLOGICAL FLORA IN THE INTESTINES, THE SKIN AND THE MUCOUS MEMBRANES

This happens as a side effect of antibiotics, soaps, some pharmaceutical prescriptions, different medicines, like cortisone, skin to skin contact with infected individuals, pregnancy, birth control pills, wrong diet

    POOR GENERAL HEALTH

Hopsitalizations du to serious illnesses, stress in any form, improper diet, diabetes, HIV and AIDS, sugar, general weakness on all levels; physical and psychological. Insufficient hygiene may cause yeast skin infections.
